Why be a SPEAK buddy?

Anyone can be a buddy - no experience required! The only thing you need is the passion and motivation to connect with new people from different countries and cultures. It really is as simple as it sounds.

Busy schedule? No problem. Language groups take place online or offline over 12 sessions of 90 minutes. As a buddy, you have the flexibility to choose your predefined weekly schedules, timing (we know morning birds and night owls exist), and if you'd like to host online or face-to-face sessions.

By leading language groups, you'll actively be championing social inclusion and diversity. Your participants may include migrants, refugees, and other communities who are looking to get integrated in their new cities and countries by learning the local language and culture in a fun and informal way. If you are a migrant yourself, sharing your language and culture with locals in your city can help you connect with others. Local or migrant, your efforts will help create diverse and inclusive cities across the globe.

You'll go through an online workshop and get access to ready-to-use learning materials, group exercises and games before the start of your language group. You can always get in touch with the SPEAK team to discuss anything related to your sessions. If you're leading an offline language group, you will be paired with another buddy so you can share your language together.

Create a free SPEAK account (if you don't already have one), and sign up as a buddy.

Complete the training for buddies.

Go through the self-service training at your own pace. Training takes around 30 minutes and includes 6 main chapters. Once you complete the training, you can start leading language groups! We also have dedicated WhatsApp groups where you can meet other buddies and exchange experiences.

Allocate yourself to a language group.

You're now ready to lead your own language group! Choose the language(s) you'd like to share, the type of session (offline or online), your prefered date and time and have fun leading your language group!
